Welcome to the Oxenhope Straw Race
Straw Race 2016
The 2016 Straw Race was a great success. The start made a return to the Wagon and Horses and whilst it was a tad chilly at the start teams enjoyed bacon sandwiches in preparation for the gruelling task ahead of them. Two hundred and eleven teams took part this year and as ever we had some amazingly quick times from our athletes to some more leisurely competitors who took full advantage of the great weather to have a stroll around the village. The fancy dress, which never fails to impress, was amazing. It is brillant to see so much effort go into costumes and it is great to see everyone staying in character along the whole course.
As ever a huge thanks to all the pubs and the Social Club who supply the beer and put on entertainment for the crowds and to the many local businesses who support the race year in year out. We couldn’t do it without them all.
Time now to put the committee back it their boxes for a well deserved rest. We’ll see you in 2017.
This year also sees the 40th anniversary of the event so it’s an exciting year for us. All competitors received 40th Anniversary T-shirts which have been kindly sponsored by a number of local businesses, namely McDowell Transport, Wyedean Weaving, Westlake & Co. Chartered Surveyors, Mercado and JMH Aspirations. In addition to the T-shirt, everyone who completed the course in the time allowed received a medal with commemorative ribbon. All category and fancy dress will be receiving an extra special “gold medal” at our presentation evening.
